Youth River Health Conference for students will
be covered by Channel Seven’s Saturday Disney and Ben from ‘Big
Arvo’ will make an appearance!
Please circulate to all teachers and place on the notice board – this
Conference is supported by the Education Department.
If you are a teacher, Principle, Landcare
member, local Government Officer, Rotarian or Lions Club member or Waterwatch
Officer it is particularly important that you get your local school involved to
ensure your region is represented at this State-wide Conference.
Don’t let your regional issue be left out!
As you are aware, we live in a region that is reliant on the
sustainable use of its natural resources. Rivers provide the life blood
for the agricultural and other rural industries that support our local
businesses and communities. To promote and encourage community
involvement in the future health of our rivers the Department of Agriculture,
Fisheries and Forestry, SA Water, the River Murray Catchment Water Management
Board and the Murray Darling Basin Commission are holding the first “Adelaide Youth River
Health Conference” at Adelaide on the 28th and 29th
of July 2005. Please visit www.riverhealth.com
Under the promotion of “One
Life, One River, Our Future” the
2 day conference will engage the youth of SA by working directly with school
students. The conference will form the only State-wide Conference to be
held in SA. It leads on from the highly successful International River Health
Conference for Youth held in Mildura,
Victoria every two years.
This program has twice been a finalist in the Eureka Prize Australian Science
Awards, is a winner of the State Landcare Award and featured on ABC's
Australian Story in August 2005.
More than a conference, students connect with industry mentors
including scientists and community leaders in natural resource management (NRM)
to study topics of their choice (i.e. floodplain management, water quality,
cultural heritage connections with the environment, blue-green algae etc) and
to develop local environmental management projects in their region. They
then come together at the conference to teach each other about what they have
learnt. So it is kids presenting to kids and providing a platform for our
next generation and future leaders to become involved in natural resource
management.
The objective of the conference is to work within the school curricula
and to assist teachers promote environmental management. However, some schools
encourage drama, maths and history students to take part in the conference.
That is it is not just about science and the environment, it can be a whole
school experience.
You can register to attend the Conference by visiting the website www.riverhealth.com
If you are a student from year 5 to 11, you can present at the
Conference by visiting the ' How to Present a Workshop ' page or contacting the
workshop manager at www.riverhealth.com
If you are an environmentally aware organisation or business who would
like to get involved, you can sponsor a school to attend the Conference. By
helping a school with travel and registration costs your logo will be displayed
on the website.
You can help promote the Conference by listing the event on your
website or covering the Conference in your newsletter. We are also inviting any
interested media to attend the event in August.
The last regional conference held in Narrabri in late 2004 received
tremendous support and praise from students, teachers and the local community.
It is anticipated that federal and state politicians and leading
celebrities will attend the Conference which will include an official
conference dinner, and musical and other entertainment to make it a life long
memorable experience and encourage young people to continue their involvement
in Natural Resource Management.
The conference will target years 5 to 11 students, that is primary and
secondary schools. It is expected that more than 250 students and teachers will
attend the conference.
To
register for the conference just log into the website www.riverhealth.com
and choose regional conference and then Adelaide.
The website also has lots of information about how the conference can be
incorporated into student learning and classroom activities.
I look forward to seeing you
at Adelaide for
the Conference.
Let’s take
environmental education to the next level!
