Subject:[YouthGAS_Exchange] Smoking in Movies
Date:Tuesday, March 1, 2005  12:46:14 (+1100)
From:Susan Martinez <susanm @.........au>

	Hi Everyone,

The Cancer Council NSW has today launched a competition targeted to people
under 25, to get their views on the issue of Smoking in Movies. The promotion is
aimed at reducing smoking rates amongst young people. Over 300,000 teenagers in
Australia say they are smokers, and over 43,000 school students are becoming
established smokers every year. With smoking related deaths totalling 19,000
annually, this is an issue that The Cancer Council is passionately committed to
addressing. Particularly as every one of these deaths is preventable.

A large body of evidence has shown that attractive or excessive images of
smoking in movies strongly influence young people to take up the habit. The
images reinforce the misconception that smoking is the norm, and is more likely
to be done by successful, attractive people.
Our Smoking in Movies campaign questions how smoking is portrayed in films. A
major element of this is a competition asking young people about movies they have
seen which show 'sneaky' appearances by tobacco products, or glamorous smokers.

To enter the competition and give feedback on this issue, go to www.smokinginmovies.com.au

Please forward this message to friends and family under 25. The competition is
being promoted extensively online via a range of youth web sites, as well as
through independent cinemas across NSW, and at NSW events for National Youth Week
in April. In addition to telling us your thoughts, you also get the chance to
win some really great prizes including a DV Cam, X-Box, surfboards and surf gear!
The competition will run until 29 April.

	Good Luck!
