Hello,
I am
just looking for some input or case studies on working with young people in a similar
environment to the one I’m working in now and what procedures, processes,
projects, ideas you may have or have used.
I
work from a Community centre which is open to the general public. I work
primarily alone with another worker two days. We also have reception staff. My
role is to work with young people in the local area. We run a number of
programs specifically for young people including drop in centre two days a
week. Young people are able to access the centre during these times but due to
the nature of it being a community centre and open to the general public, young
people tend to hang around the centre at all times. Unfortunately in these
times they are extremely disruptive to other users, riding bikes through the
centre, throwing rocks at the windows and doors.
During
my time in the position there have been a number of behavioural issues with the
young people including; graffiti, drinking, smoking, truancy, fighting,
breaking into the centre, stolen cars, smashed windows and destroying property.
The area I work in is low socio-economic, the young people are form a range of
cultural and linguistic backgrounds, but most of the young people we encounter
with the above issues are anglo, live in the immediate area, and are between
11-14years old. I would consider most of these young people to be ‘at
risk’.
These
incidences are not isolated and happen pretty much on a daily basis. If you
have any ideas or work in a similar environment I would be very grateful if you
could email me with your ideas or if you want more info just let me know.
Thanks
for your help,
Katie
