Hello everyone,
I have recently saw a post discussing work force
development. I guess this is a difficult task within Australia as the workforce
for ATOD Counsellors draws from many professional pools of people. For example
it has Psychologist, Social Workers, Nurses, Youth Workers and AOD
Counsellors etc...., with very varying skill levels. Yet alone looking at
the geographical problems associated with this very task.
Therefore, I think it is essential we look at what are the
core functions of these people within the field and what makes them competent in
doing this work. As, with most of the rest of the international communities
they look at these as the 12 core functions (Areas of competency).
1.
Screening
2. Intake
3.
Orientation
4.
Assessment
5. Treatment
Planning
6.
Counselling
7. Case
Management
8. Crisis Intervention
9. Client
Education
10.
Referral
11. Reports
and Recording Keeping
12.
Consultation with other professionals
I really think to bring more
professional recognition to the Profession of
the AOD Counsellor we should push for international
credentialing throughout Australia. I have put this idea to several government
bodies, however fear of the Industrial Complications/Impact has stopped them
from entertaining the idea.
Or you can look at the
website of the international consortium of addiction & prevention
credentialing boards. Where in at least 14 other countries they are recognized,
I ask why not in Australia? Here is the link? http://www.icrcaoda.org
I would like to be clear that
this would only enhance those people working in the field with an identifier as
being a specialist within the ATOD field, and would like to recognize and say
thanks to those who already takes on this challenging
task . Look forward to hearing your feedback
on this concept irregardless if it is negative or positive as your opinion
counts!
Cheers,
