If you have not read yet our Privacy Policy,
we suggest you do so, since the way eListas uses
cookies is according to such policy.
In short, a cookie is a small piece of information
placed for a determined amount of time on your computer by
a web server when you load a page from
such server. That by itself is harmless. It's the type of information that
may be stored what causes that some users may not trust the purpose served
by some cookies.
Cookies are not a bad thing. In fact, they can be quite useful to the
users. Cookies got a bad reputation, first because in some cases
they are somewhat intrusive cookies, that is, they are used to
learn more about you, your habbits, and in short, about things that you
may not want to reveal to third party sites and that don't help in any
way to your Internet experience.
Also, cookies may also pose a security risk,
as sometimes the information stored in them is sensitive
information, such as your login access to a particular site,
and should that information be obtained by a third party (not you
nor the server that placed the cookie on your computer)
could be used to access your account on a particular web site, etc.
The only cookie used by eListas
is not used to investigate your habbits or anything like that.
Its only purpose is, once you've accessed your account at
eListas, to remember who you are for a
specified amount of time, so that you can use
eListas without having to sign into
your account every time you go to a different page in our site.
This cookie remains active until the system detects
20 minutes of inactivity, (or for 6 months, should you select the
"Remember me" box when you sign into your account),
or until you manually select the Sign Out link to exit your account.
For more information regarding how to manage the time and way in which
eListas stores this cookie,
visit the
Storing your access information on your computer
page.
First of all you should know that
eListas designed its
cookies management system assuming that such
cookies could be obtained by a third party, who could try
to decypher them and try to access your account.
In any case, obtaining the information stored by
eListas
in your cookie is not an easy task, to begin with.
As far as we know, there are only two ways in which someone
could access your cookie.
One way is if someone is eavesdropping the information
being transmitted between your computer and our servers.
Although an experienced "hacker" with the right "tools" could do
this without a lot of difficulty,
it is not a very easy task.
eListas considers
this type of espionage to be an illegal activity, and will
work with law enforcement agencies in prosecuting anyone
suspected of illegally obtaining the information that travels in and out of
our servers.
The other way is when someone has physical (or network) access to the computer
you used when signing into your account at eListas.
Cookies are files stored on a specific file and directory on your
computer, and if such file or directory are not protected,
anyone with access to that computer can open, read and retrieve your
cookies.
And of course we cannot ignore the possibility of someone
finding a new security hole in our browsers or operating systems
that would allow a third party to access our
cookie files.
NOTE: When a server assigns you a cookie, it can do it so that
the cookie could be
accesible by any other server, although almost nobody uses this
type of cookies due to the security risks, and pretty much all
servers assign cookies that can only be returned back to the
server that originated them.
As we mentioned earlier, the cookie management design used by
eListas
assumes that such cookies could be obtained by a third party, who could try
to decypher them and try to access your account.
So, how does eListas protects the information
stored in the cookies?
The cookie stored by eListas
is made up of several pieces of information,
which is then encrypted several times by one-way algorithms,
that is, the data can not be decoded except by trial and error.
By applying these one-way algorithms, it is guaranteed that it would
be impossible to decode the information just by obtaining the
cookie, even if the hacker knows the encryption algorithm.
It is hard to imagine something that it's 100% secure, especially on
the Internet.
In this case, we have developed a system that, although it cannot be declared
100% secure, it is extremely difficult to break. We have been in business since
1999 and at the time of writing this (January 2005) there has not been one single
case of a cookie being stolen and successfully used to access someone else's account.
